Five years ago, Worcester was the epicenter of the Asian Longhorn Beetle outbreak that took out 30,000 of the trees in the city. Now, the city is celebrating its comeback with a tree-planting event on Tuesday.
The Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota teamed up with community volunteers and students from three local colleges to plant 41 new trees as part of the Worcester Tree Initiative's effort to plant 30,000 new trees by next year.
Prior to the event, a ceremony was held to celebrate Becker College, College of the Holy Cross, and Worcester State University for attaining Tree Campus USA status, a national program established by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2008. An information fair was also held to educate attendees on local tree-planting and sustainability initiatives.
“Students throughout the country are looking for opportunities to give back to their campus community and become better stewards of the environment,” said Arbor Day Foundation's founder and chief executive, John Rosenow. “Achieving Tree Campus USA status gives students that chance and sets a terrific example for other colleges and universities.”
In addition to the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, the tree-planting event was also was sponsored by the Worcester Tree Initiative, Greener U and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.
