Tom Finneran: An Easter Buffet, Sweet & Sour
Friday, March 29, 2013
The snows melt, Easter arrives, days grow longer, the sun is stronger, and baseball will soon return to Fenway Park……..it’s a great time to be alive. A buffet of items, some sweet, some sour, for your consideration---
THREE CHEERS FOR BOSTON COLLEGE:
IT’S OUR MONEY:
We are a Judeo-Christian nation. We are also an incredibly tolerant and welcoming nation regarding the practice of various religions. Perhaps we are too tolerant however…………………….not with regard to our respect of religions but with regard to the vicious persecution of Christians in various countries. I am not advancing a wish for war wherever such persecution appears. That would mean eternal war in countless theaters. But, do we have to keep sending our money and our weapons to regimes that persecute Christians. Let’s start with Egypt. After Israel, I think that they are the next biggest beneficiary of American foreign aid. And, it’s no secret that Coptic Christians are bullied, beaten, jailed, and killed in Egypt while their homes and places of worship are destroyed. This is the “Arab Spring”. May it wither now and forever. And why is our State Department utterly silent? Are they tongue-tied or just intimidated? President Obama, who seems quite impressed with his ability to speak at length on any subject, should condemn this brazen and vicious behavior. And, he should condition the receipt of every single dollar and plane on its immediate and permanent cessation. Finally, if the State Department has raised this issue and their concern in private talks, they should end the delicate diplomatic dance and go public, loudly. We are the United States of America. What we say and think is supposed to matter. Egypt, and others, should be made to understand that. Religious persecution is rancid vicious behavior. It must stop. It is our money.
LET’S EAT OUT:
AN OBVIOUS HEADLINE:
The Globe reports that single Moms face difficult financial circumstances. Wow. That’s a real revelation. Here’s another one---if I drop a ten pound weight on my toe, it’s going to hurt--a lot. Of course single Moms (or Dads for that matter) face continuous financial difficulties. That’s not news. It’s a very obvious and sad reality, visible to all, and known to all, except in the precincts of Hollywood and television where they celebrate the emasculation of the family. And many men, being “men” in the worst sense of the word, pick up on the signals that leaving spouses, girlfriends, and children behind is really ok. You know the drill about the oppressive patriarchy, and its stifling effects on the glories of woman. What drivel. And what injury it has done to women. Their “liberation” has become an ugly oppression, not that feminist professors would know or care. Here’s a suggestion for a Globe story and headline---“Where’s the father?”. That’s the question that should be chased and analyzed and dissected whenever a story on single Moms or troubled kids is being written. Where’s the father? The question has a grim, almost universal application to far too many families. It makes one weep for those Moms and those kids.
