TUESDAY HURRICANE UPDATE: Closings, Outages + More

Hurricane Sandy battered Central Mass on Monday, and GoLocalWorcester has the latest updates on its aftermath throughout the region.

According to estimates from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), a total of 385,000 customers in the Bay State were without electricity as of 9:00p.m. last night.

National Grid's power outage map indicated 64,874 customers without power in Worcester County, including 9,447 in the city itself as of 6:51a.m. Tuesday.

Governor Deval Patrick announced Monday night that school closings will be at local discretion. State offices will have a delayed opening of 10:00a.m. Tuesday.

In Worcester, the Department of Public Works and Parks will follow its normal Tuesday trash/recycling collection schedule, and contrary to rumors circulating on social media networks Monday, Halloween in the city remains scheduled for Wednesday, October 31.

The City and the Central Mass Red Cross have set up a shelter Monday afternoon at Worcester Technical High School, Skyline Drive. Transportation for residents is available to the shelter by calling 508-798-3252.

Officials asked that residents report City-related issues such as downed trees, blocked roads, flooding and sewer backups to Worcester's DPW Customer Service Line at 508-929-1300.

After closing Monday afternoon, the Worcester Senior Center and Worcester Public Library are set to reopen Tuesday at their regularly scheduled times.

The Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA) suspended bus service at 7:00p.m. Monday night, but the WRTA resumed its regular weekday schedule Tuesday morning.

Monday night's Worcester Zoning Board of Appeals meeting was cancelled, and agenda items will be deferred until the board's next meeting on November 19.
