Turtleboy: Parents Should Be Held Accountable for 15-Year-Old Being Shot

Monday, March 16, 2015

This past week a 15 year old African-American boy was shot at the Quality Inn on Lincoln Street.

We published a guest blog by one of our readers on Turtleboy Sports and it almost broke the Internet. The servers literally almost shut down and people couldn’t get on the website. Stories like this get the most attention from our society because they expose fundamental flaws in our society.

I, for one, completely agree with every word that was written. The take was simple – the kid had made it blatantly obvious on his Facebook and Twitter that he was idolizing the gangster life. He was bragging about getting girls jumped, taking pictures of him buying clothing with “dirty money,” and posting a never ending supply of pictures of what amounted to thousands of dollars. The worst part was that the kid’s parents were in constant contact with him on Facebook and even commented on some of the pictures about how “fly” he was.

Now we can all agree that this is a fundamental breakdown in parenting right? Oh wait, you mean there are actually people defending the job the parents have done?

“Such a stereotypical case of people blaming the victim. All of you spewing racism and talking about a bad parent should be ashamed. Is it really that hard to imagine a kid sneaking out perhaps? Or telling a parent he was sleeping at a friends house? Regardless of what pictures are on his Facebook or how late he was out, there is no justifying that getting shot 9 TIMES is his fault!”

What planet are these people living on? So we’re just supposed to chalk up a kid getting shot at 4 AM in a motel as “boys will be boys?” Yea that makes TONS of sense.

The problem here is that some people don’t have the guts to admit that there is a problem here. Instead of coming face to face with the truth that there was a serious lack of parenting here, people are going out of their way to rationalize this and make up excuses for the lack of parenting. How about we stop making excuses and start holding people accountable for the life that they create?
