Turtleboy: Worcester Panhandler Hit By Car: Should Panhandling Be Tolerated?
Friday, February 27, 2015
Worcester Police Department: "Worcester police responded to the area of 178 Chandler Street for a report of a motor vehicle and pedestrian accident. Upon the officers arrival they observed a 52-year-old male suffering from serious injuries as a result of being struck by a 2000 GMC Jimmy.
According to the preliminary investigation, the GMC Jimmy was traveling west on Chandler Street when the operator, a Worcester resident, struck the pedestrian who was standing in the middle of the road. Witnesses at the scene informed the officers that they were traveling east on Chandler Street when they had to abruptly avoid striking the victim just moments before he was struck by the westbound vehicle.
The victim is known to police as a habitual aggressive panhandler. Investigators are trying to determine if the victim was panhandling at the time of the accident."
See, unlike all you people whining about the "right" to panhandle, I actually care about safety. I don't want to see homeless guys hit by trucks. You do. Just check out what these geniuses said last time on Facebook
"Try helping them out maybe - There for the grace of God go you or I."
Newsflash - fighting for the right to stand in traffic begging for drug money isn't helping them out either. Keep telling yourself what a nice guy you are though.
"You ARE the problem because you think you are somehow better than this guy. Most of these people have physical and mental disorders and are not capable of managing a decent life. Some cities are providing housing and taking these people in. Of course they are hard to deal with - They have major problems but maybe a helping hand would be the right and decent thing to do. If he is addicted to drugs deal with it."
I don't think I'm better than this guy. I just want him to get the out of my way and not bang on my window demanding money. See the problem with these people is they think they're recreating the Gospel by playing the "What would Jesus do" card with all this "helping hand" talk. Well first of all, Jesus could just make them bread and wine by snapping his fingers. You people lack those divine powers. Secondly though, you're not helping them by letting them beg for drug money. You are directly contributing to the problem.
"If they want to freeze and collect nothing then so what? Did you have to look at them? Is that the problem you fake yuppy? I drive past one or two every day on the corner of Belmont and Lake Ave and never once did I care that they were there."
Hey genius - if they weren't making money then they wouldn't be standing there. But yea, I don't mind so much looking at them, but when they knock on your windows and jump in front of your car then it becomes a problem.
Look, the Turtleboy is a man of compassion. I understand that a lot of these guys are hooked on drugs, and I'm not naive enough to think you can just snap your fingers and turn your life around. But I'll tell you what's not going to help these people - having the ACLU and a bunch of suburban do-gooders with an axe to grind stand up for their right to play in traffic. The ACLU has proven itself to be useless time and time again. They care about the free speech rights for hippies who chain themselves to barrels on I-93 and lining the pockets of Worcester's finest drug dealers.
The bottom line is you don't go after the individuals by making standing there illegal. You go after the people who are giving them money. Without them these people disappear and we don't have unfortunate accidents like we had today.
