Monday, July 03, 2017
Both women suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Incident
On Friday, June 30, at approximately 9:02 p.m., Worcester Police responded to a single car crash in the area of 1137 Grafton Street. Upon the officers arrival they saw a 2003 Acura with extensive damage caused from hitting a utility pole. There were three people inside the car; a 17-year-old rear passenger was suffering from a serious head injury. The 18-year-old female driver, who is 12 weeks pregnant, was complaining of pain caused by the seat belt. Worcester EMS arrived and treated both females at the scene and transported them to a nearby hospital.
Due to the serious nature of the rear passengers’ injury, the Crash Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to take charge of the investigation.
Police were able to interview all three people prior to the two being transported to the hospital. Police were told that the Acura was heading west on Sunderland Road and had just turned right onto Grafton Street. At this time the driver lost control of the car and struck a utility pole located in front of YD Liquors at 1140 Grafton Street. No other vehicle was involved.
The Acura was towed from the scene and investigators will conduct a full mechanical inspection to determine if a malfunction may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
Investigators went to the hospital and checked on the two women. The driver was in good condition and sent for evaluation as precautionary measure. The rear passenger was being treated for her serious head injury. Her exact condition is unknown at this time but she was conscious and alert at the scene. It appears that her injury is non-life threatening.
