Where in Central MA to Buy a Ticket if You Want to Win the Lottery

Massachusetts is one of the top states in the nation in regards lottery ticket sales. According to information gathered by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries, Massachusetts sold $9,169.3 million in lottery tickets during 2011 and 2012, ranking second out of 43 states that participate. Only New York, who sold $16,307.68 million worth of tickets during the same period, ranks higher.
“We probably sell about $3,000 to $4,000 in lottery tickets every day,” said Moji Bello, the assistant manager at Honey Farms in Shrewsbury. “We have a lot of repeat customers who will occasionally win smaller prizes of $100 to $500 and have had a few big winners in the past.”
Honey Farms in Shrewsbury has the distinct pleasure of being one of the luckiest store locations in Central Massachusetts due to their selling of four top tiered prizes, one of two stores to do so in the past ten years. According to the Massachusetts lottery website, only 24 retailers have had multiple high-tiered wins in the past 10 years.
Lottery kickbacks for store owners
Being a lottery supplier in Massachusetts has its benefits, lucky store or not. According to Lisa McDonald, a media relations employee for the Massachusetts Lottery, all retailers in Massachusetts make five-percent off of their lottery ticket sales and one-percent on cash-in bonuses.
“It certainly is a substantial amount,” said McDonald. “The average store in Massachusetts makes about $38,000 in commission and bonuses per year. During the 2013 fiscal year, retailers throughout Massachusetts made over $176.4 million through these commissions and bonuses.”
McDonald also said that depending on the game, retailers make a percentage off big ticket winners. For games like Mass Cash and Lucky for Life, store owners can pull in up to $10,000 on a grand prize win. Store owners can make up to $50,000 off the multi-state jackpot and up to $25,000 off the Megabucks.
In the past 10 years, about $24.3 million in high-tiered prizes from PowerBall, Lucky for Life, Mega Millions, Megabucks, and Mass Cash, have been purchased at 15 stores in Central Massachusetts, making them the luckiest in the area.
