Worcester County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit Receives Over-Heat Detectors

Friday, July 10, 2015

WCSO, Officer Derek Peck with his K-9 Partner Jaxx along with MA Vest-a-Dog Representative Priscilla Hansen

On Wednesday, the Worcester County Sheriff's Office announced that Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog awarded a $2,000 grant to provide two over-heat detector/alarm systems to the Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit.

The heat alarm systems send an alert to the K-9 handler via a beeper on their duty belt should the interior temperature of the vehicle exceed a pre-set limit. The system also rolls the vehicle windows down, and includes a window fan, light bar and car horn that activate during the alert.

“When a dog suffers heatstroke, he/she can experience horrible distress.  The internal organ damage can be career-ending and is usually fatal.  We've provided 12 of these systems, to help ensure  K-9 safety during hot days," explains Kathy Hinds, President, MA Vest-a-Dog.

WCSO Officers Derek Peck & Peter Campo along with their K-9 partners Jaxx & Molly are the recipients of the two new heat safety alarm systems.

“Hearing about canines dying from heat stroke while in the line of duty is an unacceptable tragedy.  We are very appreciative of the Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog Organization for their generous donation of two heat alarm detector systems for our K-9 cruisers to help keep our hardworking dogs safe.”  said Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis.

Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog an independent, all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in 2000 supporting Massachusetts police dogs, by helping provide ballistic K9 vests, essential K9 equipment, training & dogs. To learn more, visit www.mavestadog.org.
