Wednesday, October 24, 2018
Kasheme Craig, was charged with unlawful carrying of a firearm, unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
Craig was also issued citations for improper display of a license plate and an inspection sticker violation.
The Incident
On Tuesday, October 23, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Worcester Police officer was on routine patrol in the Piedmont Street area. At this time the officer saw a 2006 GMC Envoy driving in front of him. The officer noticed that the light over the license plate was inoperable. The officer got closer to the car and the cruiser headlights were able to aluminate the license plate number. The officer entered the plate into the cruiser computer. The car came back with an expired inspection sticker. Given the two MV infractions, the officer signaled the driver to pull over. The car stopped in front of 85 Piedmont Street.
The officer approached the driver and asked for his license and registration.
The driver was identified as Craig, 20, of 148 Elm Street. The officer recognized Craig and realized that he is an active gang member. A records check on Craig indicated that he had two outstanding in effect for his arrest. Craig was removed from the car and placed under arrest.
Once Craig was removed from the car the officer noticed the handle to a Billy club wedged next to the center console. Upon seeing this weapon the passenger was removed from the car for officer safety purposes.
Both occupants were searched for additional weapons. The search produced negative results. The Billy club was secured. The interior of the Envoy was now searched for additional weapons. The search produced a handgun which was located in the center console. The weapon was loaded.
Craig was arrested.
