Worcester Home Catches Fire After Car Crashes into Nearby Wall

Thursday, June 28, 2018

A multi-family home on Cambridge Street caught fire after a car crashed into a nearby wall and then into the building late Monday night.

The driver of the car was not arrested, but was issued multiple citations.

No one was hurt.

This investigation is in the early stages and remains active.

The Incident

On Monday, June 25,  at approximately 10:57 p.m., Worcester Police responded to 145 Cambridge Street for a report of a car that had struck a building. Responding officers were told that the car was on fire and the flames have now spread onto the multi-family home.

Upon the officers arrival they saw members of the Worcester Fire Department already on scene and attempting to extinguish the flames to the dwelling. Next to the structure was an unoccupied BMW which was also on fire. The driver of this car was no longer at the scene.

The structure became a two-alarm fire which burned enough to cause the roof to collapse.

The registration of the BMW came back to a local 28-year-old man. A witness provided a physical and clothing description of the driver.

A short time later, officers in the area made contact with a man fitting the description walking on Mill Street by Coes Pond. A police officer stopped the man and asked for his name. The name provided was the registered owner of the BMW. At this time the driver was transported back to the scene of the crash.

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Unit were on location documenting the scene. Recon officers could not secure and process the crash area at the time until the fire was out and all fire apparatus had cleared the area.

Recon investigators interviewed the driver of the BMW. Investigators determined that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol and/or narcotics. The driver was not placed under arrest but will be issued citations once the investigation comes to a conclusion.

Recon investigators cleared the scene last evening and went back out to the crash site early this morning to continue the investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the BMW was traveling on Cambridge Street at a speed that was greater than reasonable and proper when it lost control and struck a wall near 145 Cambridge Street. The car did not strike the building. As a result of the crash, the BMW caught fire. The car was close enough to the building where the flames were able to spread to one of the side walls.

As a result, the fire spread to the attic which eventually caused the roof to collapse.

The occupants were able to evacuate the building and were not hurt.

The driver was also unhurt.
