Worcester Man Arrested in Connection With West Boylston Street Carjacking

Luis Alers, 25, of 52 Country Club Blvd was arrested and charged with Carjacking, Arson of Personal Property and Suffocation (choke hold).
Alers also had an outstanding arrest warrant on an unrelated matter, the warrant was for Assault and Battery and Threatening to Commit a Crime
The Incident
On Sunday, July 9, at approximately 11:53 p.m., Worcester Police and the Worcester Fire Department responded to the area of West Boylston Street and Hastings Road for a reported carjacking and car fire. Upon the officers arrival they observed a late model Jeep engulfed in flames behind the Kilcoyne Auto Body located at 829 West Boylston Street. The officers also met with the 29-year-old male victim, the owner of the vehicle.
According to the victim, he had gotten into a verbal argument with a male suspect that quickly turned physical. The victim was punched in the face and placed in a choke hold by the suspect. The suspect then took the keys to the victim’s vehicle and drove it behind the auto body. Shortly thereafter the victim noticed smoke coming from behind the auto body. The victim went towards the rear of the building and observed his vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The suspect was seen walking away from the auto body.
Members of the WPD Detective Bureau took over the investigation. Investigators conducted interviews and searched for nearby security footage. During the investigation detectives were able to obtain a name of a possible suspect. Detectives continued to obtain evidence against the suspect.
The Arrest
On Friday, July 14, at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the Detective Bureau made contact with the suspect on Malden Street and placed him under arrest. The suspect was identified as Alers.
