A Worcester man has been arrested for robbing the Xtra Mart on Providence Street in Worcester on Monday afternoon.

Thomas Williams, 34, of Worcester was arrested and charged with armed robbery.

The Incident

On Monday, April 3, at approximately 4:12 p.m., Worcester Police responded to the Xtra Mart located at 280 Providence Street for a reported armed robbery. Responding officers were told that a Hispanic man, approximately 5’6”, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, and brown work boots just robbed the store at knife point and was last seeing fleeing on foot on Providence Street.

A general broadcast of the suspect description was put out to all responding officers.

Upon the officers arrival they met with two employees. According to one of the clerks, the suspect approached the counter and asked him for a pack of cigarettes. The clerk turned for a moment to get the item, as he turned back he observed the suspect pull a knife from his pocket and stated that he was going to rob the store. The clerk gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money before he fled on foot.

There were no injuries reported.

At approximately 4:28 p.m., an officer searching the area came upon a man on Esther Street that fit the physical description of the suspect. Officers transported the clerks to the location and identified the male as the one who had just robbed them.
