Who are the largest revenue generating non-profits in Worcester -- and what is their impact?
Today's GoLocalWorcester "Spheres of Influence" utilizes an infographic to show the city's top revenue-generating nonprofits by size, indicating just how big a presence some of the organizations have in Worcester.
But what about their impact on the community itself? The Worcester Regional Research Bureau reported in June that 20% of Worcester's land is owned by nonprofits such as churches, college, and hospitals -- which are tax-exempt institutions.
While the lack of tax revenue is one aspect of the non-profits' presence in Worcester, Roberta Schaefer indicated that what they bring to the region is far greater.
"Worcester has been able to transform itself into a post-industrial city because of the colleges and hospitals, with the loss of the big manufacturing companies that had been here," said Roberta Schaefer with the Worcester Research Bureau. "Without these institutions, Worcester would be in the same boat as a Springfield, or a Lawrence."
Interdependency as Key
"Over the past few decades, there has been an increasing awareness from the colleges of having a dependence on the city, as well" said Schaefer. "Specifically, that it needs to be an attractive place in general for students to want to come here."
"So what we've seen is there's been an even greater cooperation, much more in the way of arrangements from the colleges -- and the hospitals, too -- to help the city with various projects.
Schaefer cited specific "payment in lieu of taxes" (PILOT) programs that the city has engaged a number of nonprofits in, which is contained in the WRRB report.
* In 2008, MCPHS University entered a 25 year agreement to give to the city 20% of the assessed value of properties increasing by 2.5% each year, to support Worcester Public Libraries
* In July 2009, WPI entered in a 25 year agreement of an annual payment of $450,000, increasing 2.5% each year, for Worcester Public Libraries -- and made a one time payment of $50,000 for Institute Park
* In May 2012, Holy Cross agreed to make 5 years of annual payments of $80,000 for the city's Mobile Library
* In March 2013, UMass Medical entered into 5 years of annual payments -- with no restrictions for the city.
"There's much more economic impact than that, however," noted Schaefer, noting WPI's investment in Gateway Park, and the Massachusetts' College of Pharmacy's in a number of buildings downtown. "Would those buildings have sat there vacant if they hadn't bought them?" Schaefer posed. "The former Crowne Plaza hotel -- you wouldn't want that sitting there empty."
Schaefer also noted the importance of the Worcester Business Development Corporation has in development, and referenced it's role in getting Quinsigamond Community College in the old Telegram and Gazette building.
College Impact on Community
Ed Augustus, Director of Government and Community Relations at Holy Cross, said the school's impact on the community went much further than the "pilot" dollars, which he noted wasn't a formal contract, but a gesture of good faith.
"We do lots of other things," said Augustus. "We gave $10K to the Wheels to Water program, we open our pool here to kids in the program, we gave $10K for the skating rink downtown. There's a lot we give to."
Augustus added that it wasn't just financial support from the college, but "The student community impact is considerable, as well," said Augustus, noting that each year, students volunteered over 63,000 hours in the community.
"I think there will always be an ongoing need in the community, of more that could be done," said Augustus. "We do what we can when we think it makes sense."
Augustus noted the economic impact that Holy Cross has on the local economy. "Each year, we spend over $46 million on our faculty and staff, over $20 million on vendors in the community, and over the past ten years, we've spent over $200M on campus construction."
Lorraine Martinelle, Director of Media Relations at Assumption College, spoke to the institution's impact on Worcester, as well.
"Assumption pumped $9.3 million into the local economy through local vendors during the 2012-2013 academic year and remains committed to serving as a good neighbor to the people and businesses of Worcester and greater Worcester," said Martinelle.
"Recognizing the significant contributions of The Hanover Theatre to Worcester’s performing arts community, Assumption College has pledged a $125,000 donation (over five years) in support of the downtown landmark. Each spring, The Hanover Theatre hosts an Assumption student production; in 2014 Assumption students will perform the Broadway musical Les Miserables at The Hanover."
Martinelle also highlighted the contributions the nonprofit made the the Worcester community
"Approximately 1,700 Assumption College students annually volunteer 125,000 hours to local nonprofits such as Matthew 25, Habitat for Humanity, and Community Harvest Project; and the Worcester Public Schools."

A recent survey released by The Leapfrog Group assigns a Hospital Safety Score, using the report card system of A to F to each of the hospitals in Rhode Island. These grades are based on expert analysis of injuries, infections and errors that cause harm or death during a hospital stay.
