Worcester Police Department Starts Initiative Using Private Cameras

Wednesday, June 10, 2015

On Tuesday, the Worcester Police Department announced that they are starting the Worcester PD Camera Collaborative - a free program that allows citizens in Worcester to register their security cameras with the police department to help deter and solve crimes quickly.

Worcester residents can register their private cameras through CrimeReports.com. The program is entirely voluntary. According to the WPD, the department will provide participants with window decals to post at the location of the private cameras.

WPD will pull together a map that shows all registered cameras, along with owners contact information, to utilize if a crime occurs in a certain area that has registered cameras. The private cameras will not be streaming to the police department. Participants will be contacted only if the police believe that their cameras may have captured a crime.

To register for this program simply go to www.crimereports.com and and click register camera. If you already have an email and password you can simply go to the next step. If you have not signed up with CrimeReports.com you will need to create a user name and password. This site also allows you to get emails concerning crime activity in your neighborhood. You can also log onto WorcesterMA.gov/police - click on Administration Division-then click on Community & Neighborhood Crime Statistics.
