Worcester Ranked #1 For Young Singles
Thursday, February 14, 2013
According to online real estate marketplace Zillow and its first "In the Move for Love Index," Worcester is the #1 city for men seeking women age 35 and under, and it's also the #1 city for for women seeking women age 35 and under. When it comes to men seeking men age 35 and under, Worcester comes in at #4.
Springfield was the only other New England city to make any of the four lists, coming in as the #10 city for men seeking women age 35 and under.
"Today's society is more transient than ever, and when young singles are considering where to move next it makes perfect sense to consider how easy it will be to meet that person of their dreams," said Zillow Chief Marketing Officer Amy Bohutinsky.
"We took a scientific approach to something that's typically been assumed more art than science; we looked at demographics, median income, rent prices and a number of other factors to pinpoint the best places for singles under 35 to move."
In order to come up with the top cities for young singles, Zillow analyzed the 150 largest U.S. cities using a methodology based on a number of factors, including disposable income. Since most young people rent, housing costs are a major expense, and more disposable income means more money to spend on dating and going out. Walkability matters too, since being able to get out and about walking to bars, restaurants, stores and entertainment venues makes it easier to meet new people while you're out.
Cities that were home to a higher proportion of single people to married ones also received a bump in the rankings. In terms of competition, Zillow calculated the ratio of single men to single women and used Census data on gay cohabitating households as a proxy for the overall gay population.
The more new people in town, the easier it can be to meet other singles, so Zillow also looked at the percentage of a city's total population that is single and relocated within the past five years from a different county, state or country.
Worcester's #1 ranking for both men seeking women and women seeking women is due to single women under 35 making up 17.7 percent of the area's population.
A transplant rate for young singles of 21.4 percent means a lot of new people and potential soul mates coming into the area on a regular basis, thus increasing your changes of finding the one.
With a Zillow Rent Index of $1,302 per month, Worcester residents face fairly reasonable median rent prices, considering that across the 150 largest cities, median rents ranged from $800 to $2,500 per month.
And those reasonable rents mean plenty of cash to wine and dine potential mates. Worcester singles had an average disposable income of $20,115 per year.
