Worcester Rotary Club has announced it has raised more than $100,000, exceeding its 2014 fundraising campaign goal by nearly $20,000.
Worcester Rotary has also donated $50,000 of the amount raised to assist the Elm Park Red-Wooden Footbridge Project. The remainder of the money will be used to support many other local community projects as well as international projects such those in Haiti, India, Kenya and Sierra Leone.
During the fundraising event on May 2 at the DCU Center, Worcester Rotary President Satya Mitra and Treasurer Robert Mangan presented an enlarged version of the $50,000 check for the Elm Park Bridge Project to Worcester Mayor M. Joseph Petty.
The City of Worcester will name the footbridge in honor of Myra Hiatt Kraft, late wife of New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft. She was a Worcester philanthropist who supported numerous community projects that sought to build bridges between people.
"Although this was a big challenge," Satya Mitra said. "We Rotarians strongly believed in the strength of our team and when you believe in your strength unbelievable things happen".
Students of Worcester Technical High School along with WPI students are working hard and diligently to produce an Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible bridge that will resemble and preserve the original historic look of the Elm Park red-wooden footbridge. This project highlights the importance of public-private partnerships.
Elm Park
Elm Park was purchased in 1854 as a "new common," putting the city, together with Hartford and New York, at the forefront of the urban-parks movement in the United States. Elm Park was re-dedicated in 1971 after extensive renovations, plantings and the complete refurbishing of the two historical bridges. Facilities include a playground, tennis courts, basketball, and winter skating.
Worcester Rotary Club
Worcester Rotary Club is District 7910 of the 109-year-old Rotary International, a worldwide service organization. Its purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders, to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
The Worcester Rotary Club held its first meeting 102 years ago, March 1912, and its charter was issued that April.
Related Slideshow: The Most and Least Charitable Communities in Central MA
Below are the most—and least—charitable towns in Central Massachusetts. Towns were ranked by how much of local median discretionary income was donated to a charitable cause. The data is taken from the Chronicle for Philanthropy, using IRS records on charitable giving as reported on individual tax returns in 2008, the latest available year.
For each listed town, the total contributions are provided, along with the median contribution, the median discretionary income, and the percent donated. A state and national ranking is also included. State rankings are based on the percent of income donated, while national rankings are based on total contributions.
Note: No data was available for the towns of Tolland, Phillipstown, and Templeton.
