Worcester East Middle teachers Stacy Lord and Howard Fain will be taking off into the stratosphere on Wednesday and Thursday evening in NASA’s plane SOFIA.

The teachers were required to complete a graduate credit astronomy course and then were paired with a team of professional astronomers to conduct science flights aboard SOFIA.
Lord and Fain will take part in two 10-hour flights with the first flight taking place Wednesday night between 10:20 PM and 8:05 AM on Thursday. The second flight will take place from Thursday at 11:35 PM to Friday morning at 9:15 AM.

Fain has set up a Facebook page titled “Lets GO WEMS” to follow along with all of their pre-flight updates. Lord can be followed on Twitter @stacy_lord using the hashtag #SOPHIALord.
After the flight experience is completed, Lord and Fain will take what they have learned from the program into their classrooms and communities at East Middle to relate the scientific discovery process and the value of it to society.
