Worcester Teenagers Arrested After Threatening Man With Knife

Saturday, January 14, 2017

Two Worcester teenagers were arrested after threatening a man with a knife and attempting to rob him of his backpack and wallet while he was walking on Bellevue Street in Worcester.

One of the teenagers threatened the man with a knife.

Heriberto Lopez, 18, and a 15-year-old boy were arrested and are being charged with armed assault to rob.

Two 12-year-olds were released to their parents pending further investigation.

The Incident

On Thursday, January 12, at 4:30 p.m., a Worcester Police officer was flagged down by a 46-year-old man in the area of 205 Chandler Street. The man told police that a group of teens had just jumped him and attempted to rob him in the area of Austin and Bellevue Streets.

As a result of the investigation, police learned that the victim was walking on Bellevue Street when a group of teenagers on bicycles approached him. One of the men in the group demanded that the victim hand over his backpack and his wallet. When the victim refused, the group of teenagers proceeded to attack the victim, punching and kicking him, knocking him to the ground. As the victim struggled to get back up to his feet, one of the suspects pulled out a knife and threatened him.

Just as the suspect began threatening the victim with the knife, an unidentified citizen was driving down Bellevue Street. The citizen pulled over to assist the victim, and all the suspects left the scene. Members of the Detective Bureau responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The victim provided police with a detailed description of the suspects.

The Arrests

A short time later, police received a call for a group of disorderly teenagers in the area of City Hall. Police were told that a group of teenagers were riding their bicycles in the middle of Main Street and were yelling at passing drivers. Police responded and were able to locate 4 teenage men riding bikes. The men matched the description given of the earlier attempted robbery. Police identified one man as 18-year-old Heriberto Lopez of Worcester.

During the stop, police recovered a folding knife from Lopez. Police identified the other three males as a 15-year-old and two 12-year-olds, all of Worcester.

Based on the investigation at the scene and information received from the victim, police identified Heriberto Lopez as the man who threatened the victim with the knife. Police also positively identified the 15-year-old as being involved in the assault and attempted armed robbery.
