Worcester’s City Hall Basement to House TV Studio

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

For over nearly a decade, the City of Worcester has been attempting to improve their television coverage of City Council, School Committee, and Board meetings. According to tonight's City Council agenda, the time for waiting for the improvements is almost over.

At the request of City Councilor Michael Gaffney, Worcester's Director of Energy and Assets John ODell has put together a brief timetable and estimated costs for a television studio to be built in the basement of Worcester's City Hall. The space for the studio is 1100 sq feet in the northwest location of the basement.

The move to the basement will combine the city's Cable Services offices and studios. Once completed, the new studio will allow an increase in city programming and live television shows.

In a report to the Worcester City Council, City Manager Ed Augustus said, "Given the ever increasing demand for high quality video for City Council, School Committee, board and commission meetings, department requests for productions, in addition to the "Worcester in Focus" and similar programming, these upgrades are crucial for the Cable Services Division to meet the needs of the City both timely and efficiently."

According to Odell's summary, construction of the studio is already underway and the construction of the studio space itself is nearly ready to begin.

The cost of the construction of the studio is almost $778,000. The work is set to be completed by July 31, 2015.
