Common Wealth: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Mass Politics?

Friday, March 29, 2013

Hot:

Worcester Slot Proposal – The developers have stuck their flag in the ground and are making a good first impression. While opponents are starting to organize, the leadership team from Mass Gaming and Entertainment, LLC as well as their parent company, Rush Street Gaming landed on the ground and started their pitch to the community.

Bill Randell – if state officials at MassPort were as passionate about Worcester Airport as Bill is, the airport would be the busiest hub in the northeast. His latest promo to attract JetBlue is a poster contest.

U.S. Senator Mo Cowan – the fill-in Senator is making the most of his time in Washington by making noise and taking a leadership position on a range of issues including Transparency in Health Insurance Market.

Activate Worcester – the conservative thought leaders have put the city on the map by getting all three GOP candidates for U.S. Senate to appear on their cable show. Michael Sullivan was first, then former Private Equity/Navy Seal Gabriel Gomez committed to appear, and lastly, State Rep. Dan Winslow agreed to appear.

The Stock Market – investors in Central MA and across the country are rejoicing with the stock market bouncing back to 2007 levels. Great news for everyone’s 401k's.

UMass Medical – kudos to the healthcare giant for moving forward with a payment in lieu of taxes of $1.58M over the next five years.

NOT:

Rep. John Fresolo – under fire for allegedly pulling a Congressman Weiner by electronically distributing pictures of his privates and now pounds his chest in defiance – whatever the outcome of the State Investigation – his arrogance should give voters pause.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren – she is willing to take on bankers, but unwilling to voice a single statement about Fresolo’s behavior. The Senator should walk the walk when it comes to repulsive behavior by a fat cat or by a Democrat.

U.S. Senate Debaters - We have fallen a long way from Kennedy and Romney debate or Warren and Brown. The first U.S. Senate debates were primary-focused, but none of the five made anyone forget Lincoln-Douglas or even Brown and Coakley.

Higgins Armory Museum – Worcester is a tremendous city of museum jewels, but the layoffs earlier this year at Worcester Art Museum and Higgins are concerning. According to Federal Tax documents filed by the Higgins Armory, the museum started 2009 with $6.2 million and ended 2011 with just $4.86 million, a loss of $1.34 million or nearly 25% of the assets in just three operational years.
