Brian O’Malley Enters State Rep Race in 15th Worcester District
Monday, March 26, 2012
He is the only Republican candidate at the moment, but the Democratic slate to fill the seat formerly held by Vincent Pedone is a busy one.
City Councilor Kathleen Toomey, Dianna Biancheria, Mary Keefe and Ralph Perez all have pulled out nomination papers to run as Democrats in the 15th District.
A sixth, Gordon Davis, has pulled papers as un-enrolled candidate.
A married father of three who resides on Belmont Street, O’Malley has never sought state office before. He ran for city council in Gardner 20 years ago.
“Yeah, it’s been a long time,” he said recently.
O’Malley said he had been considering a direct challenge of Pedone, but that came off the board when Pedone stepped down. O’Malley is bringing frustration with the status-quo to his campaign.
“One of the things I’m tired of is Worcester politicians going to Boston and doing whatever the Boston politicians tell them to do,” he said. “The first thing they want to do in Boston is cut the things that hurt people the most, but their friends with six-figure salary jobs – they are safe.”
O’Malley said he harbors no illusions about his chances of winning in a largely Democratic district.
“I’ve been told by a lot of Republicans not to even run in this district, because it’s so heavily democratic,” he conceded. “But I am sure I have more in common with the working Democrats in this area than whichever Democrat winds up winning the primary, if there is one.”
No matter the outcome of the election this year, O’Malley is sure of one thing.
“It is going to be fun,” he said.
