video: Coakley Campaign Attacks Grossman for SuperPAC Support

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

After a SuperPAC advertisement attacked gubernatorial candidate Martha Coakley and supported her Democratic competitor Steve Grossman, the Coakley campaign released a video of its own, blasting Grossman by saying that SuperPACs have no place in this election.

The video – entitled “We Meant It” asks Massachusetts residents about SuperPACs and whether they feel that they have a place in elections. At the end it offers a message: “Massachusetts said no to SuperPACs.” Check out the video below.

"By refusing to sign a people's pledge that would stop unlimited secret money from influencing this campaign, Steve Grossman has shown that he is willing to compromise his values in order to win an election," said Coakley Campaign Manager Tim Foley. "Martha Coakley's record of protecting our communities is unmatched among candidates in this race. Voters deserve to know - and Grossman must answer for  - where this secret SuperPAC money is coming from and whether corporations or individuals doing business with the Treasurer are funding it. Grossman should also disclose whether anyone helping his campaign is working with the PAC. Voters are already voicing their opposition to these attack ads and Steve Grossman should call on the SuperPAC to for immediately stop these attacks."

Grossman is the only Democratic gubernatorial candidate with a SuperPAC supporting him, according to the Coakley campaign. Additionally, he has refused to demand that the PAC pubically disclose whether the money funding these misleading ads is coming from firms overseen by Grossman in the Treasurer’s Office.

In June, Coakley asked Barry White, Chairperson of the SuperPAC supporting Grossman, to voluntarily disclose his donors and publicly acknowledge whether or not the PAC has been accepting donations from individuals or companies that have done business with the Treasurer’s Office since Grossman was elected.  White has yet to agree. Martha is once again asking Steve Grossman to disavow these ads and immediately sign a People’s Pledge to keep secret, outside money out of the race for governor.
