Coakley Urges Grossman to Disavow Illegal SuperPAC-Funded Ads
Tuesday, August 05, 2014
Coakley is asking for Grossman to disavow these SuperPAC-funded ads as well as to sign a People’s Pledge to keep unregulated, outside special interest groups out of this race for Governor.
"I applaud the Legislature and Governor Patrick for acting quickly to bring more transparency and accountability to the SuperPACs that right now have the ability to raise unlimited amounts of money from outside, special interest groups," said Tim Foley, Coakley’s Campaign Manager. "Now that this legislation is law, Barry White should immediately disclose his donors. Massachusetts voters have already made it clear that SuperPACs have no place in our elections. We hope that Steve Grossman joins Martha in recognizing that and will disavow the SuperPAC's ads and sign a People's Pledge today."
The new law - "An Act Relative to Campaign Finance Disclosure and Transparency" – signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick, went into effect last Friday. The law requires all SuperPACs to list the top five donors on their advertisements as well as to disclose all of their donors within seven days, or 24 hours if it is 10 days or less before the election.
Expecting Everyone to Comply
In addition to calling upon Steve Grossman, Martha Coakley also called upon televisions stations and Steve Grossman’s SuperPAC friend Barry White to adhere to the new law.
Coakley says that the advertisements should be immediately stopped and that Barry White should disclose all donors.
Grossman’s Response
According to Grossman’s campaign, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate has been very much in support of the new campaign finance law.
Rather than focusing on the campaign finance law, Grossman’s campaign focused more on Coakley and her continual opposition Governor Patrick’s proposal to limit gun sales. The Grossman campaign says that this common-sense proposal will help to save lives.
"Steve has consistently supported the new campaign finance law requiring transparency and disclosure,” said Chandra Allard, Communications Director for Steve Grossman’s campaign. “The real question is why Martha Coakley continues to side with the NRA and just last week repeated her opposition to Governor Patrick's common-sense proposal to limit gun sales, which will save lives."
