Common Wealth: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Mass Politics?

Friday, May 17, 2013

Every Friday, GoLocalWorcester takes a look at who's rising and falling in the Massachusetts political world. This week's politics were dominated by President Obama's administration's miscues -- and one of the major disasters may have a profound effect on Massachusetts politics.

HOT

Deval Patrick – The Governor seems to be on a roll. His handling of the Marathon Bombing was fairly flawless, he windfalls $500 million in extra revenue for the budget and now U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder looks like a dead man walking -- and Patrick is the perfect replacement. See the impact -

Katherine Clark – The candidate for Congress in Massachusetts’ Fifth District is hot. She has already scored the support of EMILY’s list, the progressive, female candidate-focused fundraising machine.

The Boston Bruins – In winning the series against Toronto, they proved you can win a 7-game series even if you only play 10 good minutes of hockey.

Michael Graham – The radio talk show voice is the new force to be reckoned with. His quick tongue and inside sources make every day on WCRN a whirlwind.

Worcester’s Style – Jen Roy’s series this week on GoLocalWorcester on the Most Stylish Women and the Most Fashionable Men demonstrated the diversity and creativity in Worcester. The city is no longer held hostage by the norms of a mill economy. It is developing a creative, hip and urbane voice.

NOT HOT

President Obama -- He could not be less hot. The man of Hope and Change is looking like a Richard Nixon wannabe this week. Problems in Libya were one embarrassment, and the IRS debacle was worthy of a special prosecutor, but the Department of Justice’s tapping of Associated Press was the kicker.

No President has incurred more messes in a shorter period of time – heck even Nixon spread-out the illegal bombing of Cambodia, Daniel Ellsberg and the Watergate break-in.

Rep. Fresolo – Sources tell GoLocal that his ethics case went the committee. No word whether his pictures will be his downfall.

Mayor Joe Petty – Does it seem like every week the Mayor is on the list? His inability to take a position on any significant issue helps the affable Mayor a regular spot on the NOT HOT list. Let’s recap his profile in courage positions:

Dead Bombing Terrorist Dumped in his City – No position

Proposed Legalized Gambling Facility – No Position

Favorite Color – Red, no wait blue.
