Common Wealth: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Mass Politics?

Every Friday, GoLocalWorcester takes a look at who's rising and falling in the Massachusetts political world. This week Democrats are the focus of Common Wealth after running up some big wins.

HOT

Ed Markey → Started off the general election looking like a boy version of Martha Coakley, but withstood the early euphoria swirling around Gabriel Gomez’s resume and functionally trounced Gomez and raised questions about his future.

MA Democrats → The two big benchmarks – two United States Senate seats in less than a year -- and the machine rolled into operation and steamrolled the GOP twice. In the end, neither senate race was close.

Senator William “Mo” Cowan → The temporary Senator will step aside for Ed Markey and leave with a reputation for class and professionalism. Cowan never overstepped and always worked hard.

WCRN’s Block Party → Gotta love old school events that brings Worcester together with some fun promotions. Kudos to Chris Thompson and crew for all their energy and love for the city.

NOT HOT

Deval Patrick → Really, you can’t get a transportation bill through the State House. Really?

Gabriel Gomez → Three months ago Gomez looked like the future of the GOP in the Commonwealth and nationally. A month ago he looked like a viable candidate that even if he lost could be the future of the GOP in Massachusetts. This week, it looks like he has won a one-way trip back to Cohassett.

Bruins → This is a tough call. The Bruins could have made the hot list even in losing, but the Bill Buckner like two-goals in 18 seconds firmly places the B’s on the Not Hot list.

Aaron Hernandez → The worst of the worst. Charged with one murder and now tied to two more. The ultimate criminal who has single-handedly transformed the Patriots into the most embarrassing team in professional sports. Should we wish for the Sullivans and Tony Eason?

Ben Bernake and Interest Rates → Bernake had looked so smart in his management of the nation’s economy, but his comments last week sent the stock market into a spiral and adversely affected the housing recovery. Interest rates jumped to 4.46. He needs to walk that dog back a bit.
