Common Wealth: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Mass Politics?

Friday, July 12, 2013

Every Friday, GoLocalWorcester takes a look at who's rising and falling in the Massachusetts political world. This week we examine the Worcester City Council, Tim Murray, and JetBlue to name a few who made the list. And, we've got a lot of sports this week too.

Hot:

Tim Murray – The Lt. Governor is hitting the ground running and making noise in Worcester at the helm of the Chamber. Kudos to the new Chamber boss who is leading the organization in stark contrast to his old guard predecessor.

JetBlue’s CEO – David Barger is going to put a full court press to make sure his Worcester to Florida route is a success. The big winner if he is successful would be Worcester Airport – the proverbial red haired step-daughter of Logan (please no angry emails from the Red Haired, Step Daughter Anti-Defamation League).

Lewis Evangelidis -- Worcester County Sheriff Evangelidis has announced the deployment of a new public safety alert system for all of Worcester County. The mobile alert technology system is smart and functional.

Holy Cross Sports – All right, it’s not hot - yet. However, the search for the new Athletic Director allows Holy Cross to rethink and potentially elevate their sports program. Did they miss the opportunity to join the new, very Catholic Big East? Yes.  Could the college jump up a mid-major league or two in basketball though and begin to restore the program to its old success? Absolutley!

Red Sox – Can’t name more than five of the players on the team, but they are still in 1st place.

Not:

Missing City Council Members – You run for the City Council and then forget to show up at the meetings and forget to vote. Here is a suggestion for the future, “Don’t run for office.”

Councilman Germain – Worcester City Councilor Michael J. Germain was absent for 9 of 59 City Council meetings and missed more than 30% of the roll call votes since January 2012, according to a GoLocalWorcester investigation. Hey Mike, did you miss 30% of the high school hockey games you were coaching?

Minor League Sports in Worcester – Baseball is dead. Hockey is in flux. Badminton any one?

WRTA – The public transportation organization was supposed to be creating a multi-faceted, intermodal transportation center. OOPS. Instead, the WRTA has created confusion, frustration and anger amongst users who just want a functional schedule.

Cronut Craze in NYC -- New Yorkers are flocking to SoHo baker Dominique Ansel’s eatery for the flaky fried concoction which he is trying to TRADEMARK as Cronuts. One little problem for the Soup Nazi-like baker, it seems as though Worcester’s own Chef Alina Eisenhauer of Sweet has been making them for years as "dosants." The New York chef is getting the buzz, but the Worcester chef is the real deal.

New England Patriots – The storied franchise is literally made up of alleged murderers, police assaulters and drunks. Sad, but true.
