Common Wealth: Who’s Hot and Who’s Not in Mass Politics?

Every Friday, GoLocalWorcester takes a look at who's rising and falling in the Massachusetts political world. This week we examine bombers, bombs and miscalculations in Worcester.
State Police Sergeant – One State police officer decided that the public deserved to see the non-Rolling Stone-side of the Boston Bomber, so he unilaterally released the suppressed photos from the night of the arrest. The photos show that Bomber #2 is a dysfunctional creep who maimed the innocent rather than the rock star image being proposed by the tired music magazine.
240 who sat in 100 degrees for the Debate – Monday night’s debate at Worcester Academy for the open 16th District State Rep seat brought out a nearly overflowing crowd to the auditorium on Providence Street. Many in the crowd may have been campaign workers or family members of the five Democrats that debated the issues, but it was a positive reflection on democracy to see the crowd sit through a night of blistering heat in the dead of summer to support their candidates.
Sales Tax Holiday – Once in a while the legislature in the Commonwealth gets it right.
Tim Murray – Winner, winner chicken dinner. The new boss at the Chamber is making big noise about raising dollars to grow tech and bio in Worcester. If he is successful, the whole City is better for it. If he swings and misses, then he runs the risk of looking like a failed politician. Either way, he is setting the bar high and that is good for Central Massachusetts.
Worcester Officials – It certainly looks like the City has bungled the casino issue. The Chicago-based developer Rush Street Gaming that pulled out of making a $200 million investment in Worcester a couple month ago has decided to open next door. The gaming company is proposing a similar project in Millbury that would create many of the negatives for Worcester and offer none of the positives.
Mayor Petty – If Rush Street Gaming ends up locating in Millbury, Worcester’s Mayor owns it. His inability to take a position on the proposed project was an embarrassment to the city. The joke would be on Worcester if Millbury picked up a 1,000 jobs and all the tax revenue while Worcester got the traffic and social ills.
Detroit Michigan – Filed for bankruptcy. Sad, but true for the Motor City.
