Fecteau: Trump’s Reckoning

Monday, October 10, 2016

Why wait until November? I just want to take a moment to congratulate our next president, Hillary Clinton. After these latest uncovered comments by G.O.P. presidential nominee Donald Trump dating back to 2005, which sanctioned sexual assault, he should have a difficult time running for dog catcher, never mind president.

Trump’s insults always seemed like part of the package. Trump has run amuck hurling slurs at everyone. He has gone so far as to insult Mexicans, veterans, African Americans, the disabled, reporters, Muslims, Asians, and women, oh so many women.

Don’t worry, his supporters said that was just Trump being Trump. Trump supporters tacitly accepted him as is, imperfections and all. His supporters say he is not a career politician; he gets things done. That is just what America needs.

After these latest comments? Come on. I mean, if Trump were a public or private sector employee, he would be fired. If Trump were in the military, he would have been brought up on charges.

However, he is not in the military or an employee; Trump is a presidential candidate and just took it to another level. Trump’s admission he potentially assaulted women in the past and sanctions such assaults is disgraceful for any person.

Moreover, he was talking about seducing a married woman. Why aren’t religious purists in the G.O.P. up in arms? I mean holy hell people, does this sound like someone who should be representing us on the world stage?  Does this sound like a man armed with the virtues and teachings of the Bible?

Trump has defended himself calling his recently disclosed comments ‘locker room banter’ and explaining he isn’t a perfect person.  I am not a faultless person in the least bit, and those comments completely shocked me.

I don’t care what party he is with, Democratic or Republican; those comments should be condemned. This man has single handedly set the bar so low that anything goes, and now, sexual assault is something that can be shrugged off with a cheesy apology? It boggles my mind.

We are living history right now. This has been great for the mass media’s ratings, but little else.  In the history textbooks, we are going to look back, say to ourselves, “what were we thinking?” and try to forget that time when a reality television star with no political experience ran for president. History will not be too kind to Trump, but also, not too kind to a country that considered him a legitimate candidate for president either.

Matt Fecteau ([email protected]) of Pawtucket, Rhode Island lost to state Senator Jamie Doyle in 2016’s Democratic primary. He is a former White House national security intern and Iraq war veteran.
