Guest MINDSETTER™ Angela Davis: Scott Brown is the Candidate that Really Stands for Women

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Davis speaking on behalf of Brown in 2010

I am responding to a recent letter put forward to a previous GoLocalWorcester Guest MINDSETTER™ piece by Mr. Helmans in which he attempted to scrape at the bottom of the political barrel to distort U.S. Senator Scott Brown's record. As a working mother with a young family, who actually knows Scott Brown, here are the facts about the Senator's record.

Scott Brown is determined to see that women have all the protections and benefits they need in the workplace and at home. He has been a staunch supporter of women since his first run for public office, and we need to make sure he is re-elected to the U.S. Senate, so that he can continue to fight for our jobs and the securities that we need.

Brown supports women

In the Senate, he has led the charge on several initiatives that are important to women. Most notable is his strong support for the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which ensures that women who experience violent crimes will have the opportunity to address and prosecute their offenders. He has also been the leader in standing up for women in the military, taking steps to guarantee that there are safeguards in place to protect them as they serve our country. Additionally, he would have supported the Lily Ledbetter Act, which was passed in 2009, and would have addressed many of the concerns pertaining to equal pay.

Senator Brown understands that women, like all Americans, have been hurt by this bad economy. He is working every day in Washington to create new jobs, and put our country back on a path of economic growth. Unlike Elizabeth Warren, who will kill jobs due to her support of tax hikes, more government spending, and further unnecessary regulations, Scott wants to create jobs by empowering the private sector. He is looking to find areas where we can cut taxes, get rid of wasteful spending, and repeal excessive regulation, because through that approach, we can unleash a wave of new jobs across Massachusetts and America. He deserves the support of women in this state because he is fighting for new and better jobs for us, while Professor Warren’s plans will destroy jobs.

Warren's stands costly

Professor Warren is also the wrong candidate for women because of her support of big government programs like ObamaCare. She simply doesn’t understand that the 18 new tax hikes in this law will crush our economy and create more unemployment. Specifically for Massachusetts, the new 2.3% tax in medical devices has to be repealed, because the medical device industry is huge in Massachusetts, and if this tax is kept, our local economy will be devastated. While Senator Brown has fought hard to see this tax, and the entire law repealed, Warren continues to blindly support this job-killing legislation.

Warren also does not stand on our side when it comes to our nation’s growing national debt. Even as members of her own party warn about the looming fiscal crisis, Warren continues to support higher taxes and increased government spending, which does nothing to address our nations critical economic outlook. Scott Brown is looking out for the future of America, and he knows that if our children and grandchildren are to live in the same kind of country that we grew up in, then we have to take steps right now to curb our debt and work towards finally balancing our budget. This is an important issue to me as a woman, and it is incredibly worrisome that Elizabeth Warren is seemingly ignoring this coming crisis.

Scott Brown knows the challenges that women face, as his wife Gail has worked full time for many years as a television news reporter and his two daughters are just now entering the work force. While Elizabeth Warren continues to advocate for measures that will destroy our jobs and crush our economy, Senator Brown is fighting to give his wife and daughters, as well as all women throughout Massachusetts, every opportunity to succeed in today’s economy.

Labeling Senator Brown as an opponent of women in an attempt to score political points has no place in this campaign. When voters get to know Senator Brown and understand his positions, they will see that he stands alongside women in the battle to achieve equality, and his work in the Senate has, and will continue to reflect that.

Angela F. F. Davis is a Foxborough native, a full time working mother of two small children, and has worked in education for over 25 years. She formed the "Women for Brown" Coalition during the Senator's first campaign and is passionate about women's issues, community service, and music/art education
