NEW: Brown Sticks to Pledge on PACs - Calls on Third Party to Drop Advertising
Tuesday, March 06, 2012
A group called CAPE PAC was running Google ads promoting Brown. Notably, two pro-Warren groups, ReThink Brown and Bold Progressives, also ran Google ads after the signing of the historic People’s Pledge on January 23, 2012.
Additionally, Barnett today sent the following email to CAPE PAC asking them to immediately cease their online advertising:
To Whom It May Concern,
It has come to our attention that you are running online advertisements supporting the reelection of Sen. Scott Brown. While we appreciate your enthusiasm for Sen. Brown’s candidacy, he and his Democratic opponent, Professor Elizabeth Warren, have signed an historic agreement which Sen. Brown proposed that enforces voluntary financial penalties on campaigns that benefit from outside advertising, including online advertising. I have attached a joint letter from the two candidates outlining this agreement.
Sen. Brown is a man of his word, and as a result of your advertising on his behalf, he will honor the agreement by paying out of his campaign account an amount equal to 50 percent of your spending. In short, while your advertising on his behalf is clearly intended to be helpful, it is actually costing his campaign valuable resources. It is Sen. Brown’s strong desire that outside groups, including those who wish to support him, abide by the terms of the Pledge.
Sincerely,
Jim Barnett
Campaign Manager
