New: City Councilor-at-Large O’Brien Will Not Seek Re-election

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

Former Mayor and Councilor-at-Large Joseph O'Brien will not be seeking re-election to the City Council or run for School Committee he announced yesterday on his Facebook page. O'Brien is currently serving his second two-year term in his position as Councilor-at-Large after serving as Mayor of Worcester from 2010 through 2011. He also served three terms on the school committee prior to his stint as mayor and councilor.

"In this past decade, working with all of you, we have been able to make our city a better place to live and work. Together we have been able to make great strides in improving educational outcomes and making a better learning environment for our children by investing millions of dollars in facilities and technology," said O'Brien on his Facebook.

"We have improved our neighborhoods by investing in new streets and sidewalks, rebuilding our parks and by planting thousands of new trees. Despite difficult economic times, we have been able to hire new police officers and firefighters to improve public safety. We have also helped to rebuild our downtown and create new jobs at fair wages for our citizens. This has only been possible because our government officials, business leaders, union officials and the civic leaders have all worked together and I thank them for their efforts."

The councilor went on to thank the city's public employees and his fellow elected officials for their service to the city in his announcement.

O'Brien has seven more months on his current term. He states that during his final days on the City Council he will "continue help advance our efforts to improve our schools, strengthen neighborhoods and create good jobs for the people of this city."
