NEW: Claros Opposed to Tax Package

Thursday, June 27, 2013

Today, Carol Claros, candidate for State Representative in the 16th Worcester District, expressed deep disappointment in the passage of the $500 million tax package.

“Do our elected officials not understand that Worcester families are hurting? Our personal budgets are stretched to the max, and now we are going to have to pay more money to drive to work, and it will cost even more next year. It has to stop. That’s why I am running for State Representative,” said Claros. “As a single mom, I know how tough it is to make ends meet. People are struggling. I don’t know anyone who thinks the recession is over.”

Yesterday the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a tax package 105 to 47. It raises the gas tax 3 cents and links it to inflation which means the gas tax will increase every year. Also, included are $1 hike on cigarettes, additional utilities taxes and new taxes on software.

“I drive 75 miles round trip to my job as a nurse. While legislators get their per diems, the rest of us have to pay these extra taxes. That’s wrong. As the next State Representative, I am going to get rid of per diems and fight to protect people’s paychecks,” said Claros.

Claros points out that the additional $500 million in tax revenue is not needed. Tax collections have exceeded predictions by $575 million. The additional revenue could be used to fund transportation needs. Claros also supports a one-time tax amnesty plan that would also generate hundreds of millions of dollars.

“We have the funds to pay for transportation without reaching into our wallets once again. It is time for the state to start acting like a responsible single-mom who balances a family budget every week,” said Claros.

Early this week Claros announced plans on filing legislation to end the per diem perk for legislators.
