NEW: Micky Ward Backs Out of Brown Endorsement

Friday, August 31, 2012

A day after it was announced that "The Fighter" would be endorsing Republican Senator Scott Brown, Mickey Ward canceled his plans after learning of Brown's positions on gay marriage and unions.

Brown was scheduled to meet with Ward today and receive the Lowell native's endorsement, one week after his Democratic opponent Elizabeth Warren visited Arthur Ramalho’s West End Gym to secure the endorsement of Lowell's Mayor Patrick Murphy.

According to the Lowell Sun, Ward confirmed he would endorse Brown when reached by phone on Thursday.

However, the boxer called back just 30 minutes later to say he would not be supporting Brown.

“I found out Scott (Brown) is anti-union and I’m a Teamster guy,” Ward was quoted as saying.

“I found out he’s also against gay marriage and I say if you love someone you should have the same rights no matter who you are.”

It's really strange how anyone with a little juice in a community would would be willing to endorse any candidate without checking him/her out beforehand. At least Mickey Ward did the right thing before the bell rang. Chalk up a win for Mickey Ward on that one.
