EXCLUSIVE: Warren Demands Apology to Family
Saturday, June 02, 2012
In the ever escalating war of words over Warren's claims of her family' heritage and its linkage to preference as Professor at Harvard, Warren fired back hard while traveling by train to the State Democratic Convention. Warren is a candidate for the Democratic nomination to recapture Ted Kennedy's US Senate seat.
“My mother was part Cherokee and Delaware. It was a source in our family of importance for her and part of who she was, and she will always be a part of who I am,” Warren said in an exclusive interview with GoLocalWorcester. “When Scott Brown says my mother and father are not telling the truth, he’s gone too far. I think he does owe me an apology… Let me rephrase that. He owes me and my three brothers an apology.”
Senator Brown recently commented to GoLocalWorcester on Warren’s touted heritage of being 1/32 Cherokee: "My mom and dad told me a lot of things too. But they're not always true."
Warren believes that the Senator owes her and her brothers a personal apology for bringing her mother and father into the issue.
“This is about how I grew up. This is about how I was raised,” she said. “I identified myself in a directory because it is part of who I am, and I am not ashamed of it. It’s just part of who I am. I’ve never tried to hide it.”
Warren says that she has never received any benefit from filing as a Native American with Harvard University.
“It wouldn’t have made any difference. I did not benefit from it,” Warren said. “He hired me because I work hard.” She was hired by Charles Fried, who served as U.S. Solicitor General under President Reagan.
Warren has been supported in her claims by the president of the New England Native American Institute.
Warren also issued a public statement regarding Brown’s remarks, saying “I didn't get in this race to fold up the first time I got punched.” She says Brown is avoiding real issues by making comments like he did.
“Scott Brown's plan is to talk about my family's heritage -- and to tell me how I grew up,” she said. “Just yesterday, he called my mother a liar -- and then he smirked to reporters when told I said that attacking my deceased parents is offensive. If that's all you've got, Scott, I'm ready.”
Warren’s train to Springfield for the Massachusetts Democratic Convention stopped in Worcester briefly at Union Station.
“I'm joining thousands of dedicated men and women who are already knocking on doors, making phone calls, and talking to voters about what's at stake if Scott Brown is reelected,” Warren said. “I'm ready to work -- and so are the thousands of people joining me this weekend.”
