NEW: Worcester Mayors Endorse Warren
Friday, November 02, 2012
Former Mayors Joseph O’Brien, Former Mayor and currently Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray joined former Mayors Joseph O'Brien, John Anderson, and Paul Mullaney to echo Petty's support for Warren in her bid to unseat Republican Senator Scott Brown. Former Mayor Ray Mariano did not attend the event, but signed on to the endorsement of Warren.
Together, the six Mayors represent close to 20 years of leadership of the second largest city in New England.
“I’m proud to stand with my predecessors,” Petty said. “We’re coming together not out of politics, but for one simple reason: Elizabeth Warren is the only candidate in this race who will stick up for the needs of Worcester; for the working families that are the fabric of our community; and for the small businesses that drive our economy.”
Petty, who has spent time with Warren during her visits to Worcester during the past year, said she understand the issues the City faces and how to help move it forward.
"It's a question not about the past, but about the future," said John Anderson, who served on the City Council for nearly 20 years and was Mayor of Worcester in 1986.
Anderson argued that Brown would be a return to the past, while Warren offers voters a far better future.
Former Democratic Worcester Mayor and current City Councilor Konnie Lukes endorsed Brown earlier this year and is a co-chair of the "Democrats for Brown" coalition.
"Scott Brown won Worcester County in 2010 with his promise to be an independent voice for Massachusetts. As a Democrat and former mayor of Worcester, I'm voting for Scott because he kept his promise and is one of the most bipartisan senators in the country, voting half the time with Democrats and half the time with Republicans," Lukes said.
"Elizabeth Warren has the opposite message, promising to be another party-line vote and further divide Washington. Democrats don't want to see more extremism; we want to see progress, and Scott Brown is the only candidate who moves this country forward by putting people over party."
