State Officials Expecting Low Voter Turnout for MA Primary

According to Secretary of State William Galvin, approximately 550,000 Democratic voters and around 170,000 Republican voters are expected to come out and vote on primary day. These figures represent about 15 to 20-percent of the state’s registered voters.
“I would be happy to be wrong,” said Galvin in a State House press conference. “I would be thrilled if we crest 600,000 tomorrow. But I am, at this point, skeptical.”
These numbers are expected to fall significantly short of the 900,000 who voted 2006 Democratic primary, which was the last time there was an open seat for governor and a contested primary. In 2010, the Democratic primary only had 487,000 Democratic voters, but Deval Patrick was running for reelection and was uncontested in the primary.
State officials say that the turn out could be a byproduct of a shortage of hotly contested local races coupled with a lack of interest for the candidates.
