Thursday, May 02, 2013
The poll was conducted between April 11-18, 2013 by Western New England University Polling Institute. The 528 polled residents were asked, “Do you approve or disapprove of the way Elizabeth Warren is handling her job as United States senator?”
Names of the candidates for the 2013 special Senate election appeared in random order before the name of Elizabeth Warren in the questionnaire.
Central Mass Disapproves
One metric that the study used divided the sample by region – Western Mass, Central Mass, North/South Shore, and Boston and suburbs.
Those polled in Central Mass replied with a 32 percent approval rating for the senator, and 34 percent disapproval. Thirty-four percent also responded with “Don’t know/Refused.” Central Massachusetts made up the smallest amount of any region polled by Western New England University. Sixty-five individuals from the region participated in the study.
Around the State
The next largest sample size, Western Mass, gave Warren a 60 percent approval rating. The 98 residents polled had a 17 percent disapproval rating for the senator, and 23 percent either refused to respond or responded with “Don’t know.”
In the North/South Shore areas, 170 were polled, revealing a 46 percent approval rating, and a 26 percent disapproval rating. Twenty-eight fell into the third category.
The only region to report a higher than 50 percent approval rating for Elizabeth Warren’s job so far in DC was Boston and the city’s suburbs. Fifty-four percent of the 195 residents polled in that region approved of Senator Warren’s job so far, and only twenty-six percent disapproved.
Other Trends
Across party lines, seventy-six percent of Dems said they approve of Warren’s work, while seven percent disapprove. They made up 184 of the 528 polled. Only 74 Republicans were polled, and only 16 percent of them approved of the senator’s job in DC. Fifty-five percent disapproved.
Of the unenrolled voters (254 polled), 42 percent approve of Warren’s job, and 31 percent disapproved. Overall, with registered voters, Warren received a 49 percent approval rating and 26 percent disapproval.
According to the poll, half of all females polled (298) approve of the senator, and 49 percent of males (230 polled) approve. Male voters disapproved more of the senator’s job than female voters – 30 percent to 22 percent, respectively.
Young voters and those ages 65 and older approved of Warren’s job more than those in the 35-49 age range and the 50-64 age range. Fifty-seven percent of 18-34 year olds approved of her work, and 56 of those 65 and older approved. Only 43 and 49 percent of those 35-49 and 50-64 years old agreed.
Results shows that those with higher education were also more approving of Warren’s job in office.
