Theater Review: Brown/Trinity’s Threepenny Opera

Near the end of the Brown/Trinity Rep MFA program’s production of The Threepenny Opera, one of the characters claims “only artists can tug at anybody’s heartstrings now.” Whether you agree with that or not, you can’t argue that art, and theater in particular, has a way of evoking a range of emotions. Unfortunately, Threepenny presents a grim look at human nature while failing to create any deep sense of concern for or investment in the characters.

RISD Student Stages Art with Endangered Providence Building

Providence pedestrians turned heads yesterday afternoon as RISD sculpture graduate student Tamara Johnson physically integrated her body into an endangered property. “Yes it is what it looks like, I am supporting the building!” Johnson responded to an intrigued passerby. The RISD student provided support by holding up a piece of foam, camouflaged as a steel beam, from 11am through 1:30pm to draw attention to the property.

NEW: Wheeler School Receives $2 Million Grant From Malone Family Foundation

The Wheeler School in Providence has received a $2,000,000 endowment grant from the prestigious Malone Family Foundation, based in Englewood, Colorado. The award — one of only a handful made by the Foundation each year — will ultimately provide scholarship aid for “Malone Scholars” at Wheeler who demonstrate extraordinary academic promise as well as significant financial need.
