But,...but Anita...

...can't they all work on GOVERNMENT construction jobs,...at $15.oo/hour?

Think about it,...WHO wants to hire a former gang-banger – for ANY job?

The Democrats [who PRETEND to care about minorities EVER election season] – have doomed two, maybe three generations of poor inner-city kids to early motherhood and / or jail! Because they care SO much, and they're SO VERY SMART!

You know what we need?!?

We need a minimum wage increase. That way all of the young urban kids that have jobs now will lose their jobs. This will increase the ranks of the gangs, now more gangs mean more illegal activity. That should solve everything. Right?

“Partisan and Polarized” is EXACTLY what most of your columns are Rob. YOU are a BIG PART of the PROBLEM!

The real divide is between people [Democrats] who want to VOTE for a living; - and people [Conservatives] who still want to WORK for a living – and have government leave us alone to do it!

We who WORK, and who have SAVED for our old age are rightfully outraged to see Deval Patrick and Obama give our hard-earned money and savings away to layabouts, illegals, political donors, Acorn and the SEIU.

WHERE is YOUR outrage when Obama dumps planeloads of illegals into our already bankrupt state? And BTW,...how many did you take into your home?

Citizens need to take charge of their city. Police Chief Gary Gemme has steadfastly failed to issue firearms permits to LAW ABIDING citizens, – leaving them helpless in the face of armed thugs. That must change.

Armed citizen patrols – a constitutional part of 'the well regulated militia' – are the short-term answer, - but they MUST be armed.

JOBS are key for the long-term social and economic changes needed to end gang dominance; - but that would mean voting the Democrats OUT!

Cristiana Quinn has nailed it. We, at MathAltitude School of Mathematics (www.mathaltitude.com), and our friends at various after-school program have to wait in line till parents sign their kids for multiple sports. Parents themselves often feel like the hostages by the coaches of the sport teams having to wait till the very last minute to get their schedule and as a result rearranging everything to make it fit their family life. Very often it happens at the expense of other interests and activities their kids could be involved otherwise.

Just three (3) days ago the ISIS/ISIL [do you know who they are?] announced gleefully that they had captured Saddam's former Chemical Weapons Factory.

The entire world knew Saddam had them.

Turkey's refusal to let our 4th IS come through and attack from the North – caused enough delay that Saddam was able to truck them to fellow Baathists [do you know who they are?] in Syria – where Assad is now using them against his own people.

Do you remember Saddam using gas against the Kurds? [Do you know who they are?]

Funny to hear you quoting Rand Paul. Do you know who HE is?

I've just GOT to ask:

Nicholas – do YOU own a gun? Have you EVER?

Your gun-phobic pieces, - and your continued use of first the double-45 and now the distorted pistol picture leave little doubt in my mind that you have an unnatural fear of guns.

Fathom for a moment that both Mucko McDermott and Neil Entwistle – who killed innocent unsuspecting victims – were criminals – or at least criminally insane.

But Amy Lord – chosen at random and stabbed to death by illegal immigrant Edwin Alemany – couldn't even defend herself with pepper spray!

If you are SERIOUS about reducing “GUN DEATHS” - bring back our DEATH PENALTY!

Why do you suppose Aaron Hernandez is always seen smiling? Did our tough gun laws stop him – for an instant? He killed two people over a spilled drink! I repeat: HE killed two people – a 'gun' didn't!

Wow Nicholas, you have basically recycled your article from June 8th! Even quoted the same ignorant gun-control extremist!
Since you've recycled your article, I will recycle my comment:
http://www.golocalworcester.com/news/ma-gun-advocates-demand-rewrite-gun-violence-reduction-bill

WOW! Is she (Sheila Decter) delusional?? Which is more fair, to call her a liar or ignorant?

“They have voiced their concerns at various meetings; it is clear that this legislation attempts to address those concerns.”
"Decter says that many attempts have been made to work with GOAL to create a bill that is of interest to both parties, but the group always wants more. Every time a concern is addressed, GOAL finds a way to find something else to complain about."

There was ONE public hearing for this particular bill, a week after it was introduced! GOAL was not involved with drafting this bill. This bill does absolutely nothing to address any concerns from GOAL or gun owners in this state. Unless she is referring to Linsky's previous proposals, and her version of "compromise" is "we will only screw you over a little instead of completely and you should be happy with that".

This bill only makes the current laws more onerous and confusing, there is absolutely nothing of benefit to gun owners in it!

“Now that we are ready to pass this law, they are finding new concerns,” said Decter. “I think all of this is an effort to delay this bill even further.

Again, there was ONE public hearing on this bill - a week after it was introduced!! Delay it? as opposed to ramming it through the legislature near the very end of the session?
These very concerns were addressed previously with regards to Linsky's bill! They have been concerned for years since Chapter 180 was passed in 1998, and now the current bill intends to make things worse!

"but the group always wants more."
Go review the history of gun laws in MA, particularly CH. 180. And look around the country at all the other gun control laws that are being introduced. It is painfully obvious that it is the gun control crowd that "always wants more"!

"promoting freedom and liberty but they are only focusing on the freedom and liberty of gun owners."
We do indeed focus on "freedom and liberty" for *every* person of the commonwealth. That means making a core, constitutionally gauranteed, civil right accessible to everyone. That is why we oppose things such as "suitability" standards where a police chief has arbitrary power to deny someone their civil rights. Such laws where police can determine who is a "desirable person" are reminiscent of Jim Crow laws - its amazing to me that in the year 2014 such laws are not only still on the books but there are people trying to expand them!

"They don’t want to pay attention to the fact that people want to live in a safe environment where guns are not a concern.”
Sorry, but your desire for security theater does not trump my *actual* civil rights.

Nicholas, I am amazed at the comments in your article from Sheila Decter, the Director of the Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action. Sheila is apparently completely ignorant of the effort GOAL and its members have expended in affecting the current gun control legislation.

First, GOAL was specifically included from the task force put together to research gun violence in the state. The deck was stacked against gun owners from the start. Nonetheless, GOAL encouraged its members to attend the town hall meetings across the state to present their concerns and suggest ways that gun laws could be written to address crime without affecting their civil rights. Hundreds if not thousands of members attended these meetings. In addition we wrote our legislators asking them for effective change, and not for more useless, feel-good legislation that abrogates our rights.

GOAL was not consulted while the bill was being drafted. The first we GOAL members saw of the bill was when it was released to committee. The bill was worse than we feared. None of the concerns raised at town meetings were addressed. The bill is an anti-gun extreme designed to appease the ignorant masses. To say that we GOAL members were disappointed is an understatement. We have had next to no time to react to this poorly drafted proposal. The bill has many flaws, and GOAL has worked hard to get its members mobilized in a very short time.

That Sheila Decter is ignorant of our efforts is no surprise, as there has been no news coverage that I have seen. That she calls for no compromise is also no surprise, as she obviously is solidly in the gun control camp. That you don't fact check her assertions before publishing is telling in that you are either reporting from a biased view yourself or unwilling to do the legwork to put together an accurate story. I would hope it is the latter and that you would consider a follow-up that allows Jim to counter these baseless claims. A little objective reporting -- from all news sources -- would go a long way to removing the us vs them mentality we have in this state over guns.

From: Charter School Cap Debate Rages on as Senate Caucus Debates Bill

in News

Dominic Slowey, of Slowey/McManus Communications, is a “strategic public relations firm,” whose clients not only include Corporate Welfare Queen Walmart and the Massachusetts Charter Public School Association but individual charter schools which include Academy of the Pacific Rim, Phoenix Charter Academy, Boston Renaissance Charter, Associated Early Care & Education, Community Group, and Hampden Charter School of Science! Is the money to pay for this charter PR coming out of school funds paid for with taxpayer dollars? PR is not direct service to children and shouldn’t be paid for with public, taxpayer funds.

There is only so much money, and looking at the big picture, if you want to do something for the lowest 10% the states poorest school districts, it seems to me that taxpayer money would be better spent on early education and full day kindergarten for all, instead of increasing charter schools and paying EMO’s (Education Management Organizations) all that money to run them.

“Lifting the charter school cap” will continue creating a two-tiered school system in Massachusetts. Representative Peisch, reintroduced this bill after it was shot down by the Education Committee, I find it aberrant that are no charter schools or “turnaround/spinning” schools Wellesley, Weston and Wayland, the toney suburban communities that she represents! She touts “parent choice” as long as it’s not in her community!

Recently, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School was shot down when it wanted to open a regional charter clone and accept students from Weston, Newton, and Brookline! The Asian student population in Weston’s is 12.6%, Newton is 16.8%, and Brookline’s is 18.2%. You would think that, with such large Asian populations, these toney suburbs would welcome the opportunity to give “parents choice” of an Asian themed charter school. Why didn’t Representative Peisch advocate for a charter school for them?

She didn’t because Massachusetts State Legislators have come to realize the negative impact that charter schools and “turnaround” have created in our state, and especially in urban school districts like Boston. Elected officials in these suburban communities are saying no to charter schools. They understand how a charter school would drain resources from their traditional public schools in their "unified" school district! The Andover School Committee said no to STEAM Studio charter’s proposal even though a school committee member proposed it! The Andover School Committee believes that funds available for education should be invested wisely in their existing schools in order to move Andover’s Strategic Plan forward.

Why shouldn't the lowest 10% of Massachusetts schools expect the same! Why should our schools be victim to New Market Tax Credit Investors who are trolling for a tax credit with a 39% return! State Legislators see what is happening in Boston Public Schools, and our other urban cities, and don’t want their communities schools to be turned into the two-tiered segregated system that has been imposed on Boston Public Schools with charters and “turnaround” that have created a windfall for charter school venture fund investors at the expense of the Massachusetts most vulnerable children!

Massachusetts’s charter schools had 20 years to prove themselves to be “beacons of light” and “innovation.” They have only proven themselves to be segregation academies, pushing out any student who would threaten their test averages, students with disabilities, and English-language learners. Charter schools have failed the public trust. Our Legislators need to stop and place a moratorium on the approval of any new charter or turnaround schools. It's time to invest in early education and our traditional public schools that educate ALL children. The Massachusetts Senate needs to do the right thing and CLOSE THE LID!
