Worcester native Tim Collins pitching in World Series
2014 was a good year in Worcester sports. Many great stories emerged and GoLocal was there to cover them all.
This year, we saw a Worcester native pitch in the World Series, another Worcester native was drafted by the World Series Champion Giants.
On top of all that, the New England Revolution gave everyone a thrill by getting to the MLS Cup Final.
All of those stories and more are covered as GoLocalWorcester takes a look back at the biggest sports stories of 2014.

14. Patriots Win 6th Straight AFC East Title
The New England Patriots are AFC East Champions for the sixth straight season and for the 12th time in the Belichick/Brady era.
The Pats have also locked up their 12th straight season of ten wins or more, continuing to prove year in and year out to be an incredible model of consistency.

12. Recruiting- Top Lax Players in Central MA
The national lacrosse boom hasn't eluded Central Massachusetts, where the talent pool is as deep as ever and the quality of play on the high school and club lacrosse scene is at its pinnacle.

9. AHL Game Turns into Brawl
The NHL's minor league system, the American Hockey League, brings exciting hockey action to many of the regions cities. Found within that action are some great old-fashioned hockey fights.
In this one, the Portland Pirates and Adirondack Phantoms gave us quite the bout. With less than a minute remaining in their matchup, a brawl erupted across the ice, clearing the benches, and resulting in 10 major penalties… even the goalies got involved in the action.

10. CVS Classic Donates $1.4 Million to Local Charities
In 2014, the CVS Classic raised a record $1.4 Million and donated it to 80 charities across southern New England. The classic has raised $18 million in total since it started in 1999.
This years field included players such as Matt Kuchar, PGA Champion Jason Dufner, Steve Stricker and Masters Champ Zach Johnson.
The 2015 CVS Classic will be held from June 28 to June 30 at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington.

8. Celtics pursuit of Kevin Love
The Boston Celtics cashed in on Paul Pierce’s trade exception, acquiring assets that could have helped the rebuilding franchise make a trade for All-Star Kevin Love.
The Celtics were involved in a 3-team trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Brooklyn Nets, which gave Boston Tyler Zeller, Marcus Thornton, and a 1st round pick from the Cavs in exchange for Pierce’s $10.3 million trade exception and a conditional 2nd round pick.
It was all for not however, as Love ended up joining Lebron James in Cleveland.

6. End of an Era- Scarnecchia retires
Prior to the season, the New England Patriots announced that offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia is retiring following a 32 year career in the NFL, including 30 years with the Patriots. In his storied career, that spanned over four decades, Scarnecchia became one of the most respected men in Patriots' history.

5. Former Patriots named HOF semifinalists
The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced its semifinalists for the class of 2015. The 26 modern-era semifinalists include offensive stars, defensive stalwarts and coaching legends. The list also includes four former Patriots — highlighted by Ty Law.
The full list of former Patriots that are up for Hall of Fame enshrinement are: Ty Law, Junior Seau, Tory Holt and John Lynch. Although Holt and Lynch did not play any games for the Patriots, they do count as former Patriots.

4. National Felony League- Patriots
2014 saw former Ravens running back Ray Rice get suspened indefinitly from the NFL for hitting his then Fiance, now wife. Then just a short time after that, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson got suspended indefinitly for beating his child.

3. New England Revolution go to MLS Final
The New England Revolution advanced to the MLS Cup Final for the fifth time in franchise history after defeating the New York Red Bulls 4-3 on aggregate.
The Revs faced the LA Galaxy in the final and lost a heartbreaker, 2-1 in OT.
The Revs run to the finals captivated all of New England and has greatly helped grow the game of soccer.

2. Beede hopes to be part of the World Series
The San Francisco Giants won their third World Series title in the last five years and have turned their organization into the first MLB dynasty since the New York Yankees in the late 1990s.
Tyler Beede, of Auburn, was drafted by the Giants with the 14th overall pick in June. As soon as next season, Beede hopes to be pitching for the Giants to help continue their winning ways.
