2012 CMass Lacrosse Players to Watch

Monday, April 02, 2012

Algonquin Junior Davis Kraft will look to improve upon an impressive sophomore season.

There may still be a chill in the air, but it is time for spring sports here in Central Massachusetts. While the region has not been historically known for lacrosse, several programs and players are doing their part to change that. With teams contending for state titles, and some of the most talented players in the Commonwealth, Central Mass lacrosse is certainly on the way up. Naturally, GoLocalWorcester has you covered with the top players to watch this lacrosse season.

Conor Healy, Senior, Algonquin Regional: Central Mass’ top scorer from last year (116 points) returns for his senior season with 200 career goals in sight. Healy can certainly put the ball in the back of the net, but his passing ability sets him apart from many other scoring attackers. Algonquin loses several key players, so look for Healy’s already impressive numbers (60 G, 56 A) to go up again this season.

Jeff Desko, Senior, St. John’s School: Desko is the returning star of the region, playing for Central Mass’ premier high school lacrosse program and set to head off to national power Syracuse for college. But what makes Desko great is he does not buy into his own hype. The talented attacker knows he will have to play his best lacrosse yet to get St. John’s back to the top of Central Mass.

Brett LeCLair, Sophomore, St. Peter-Marian: LeClair has started the season quickly, scoring three goals in St. Peter-Marian’s season-opening win over Worcester Combined. The Guardians were only 4-12 last season, but scored an impressive win over Milford to close out the year. If they are to improve in 2012, LeClair’s crafty scoring ability will be a major factor.

Tom Bavis, Senior, Nashoba Valley Tech: Though he is a bit undersized at 5-foot-7, Bavis knows how to score. The senior attacker put 91 points (47 G, 44A) on the board for the Vikings last season, and scored four goals in their season-ending victory over North Shore Tech. Bavis can score in bunches, but will have to be more consistent as a senior. Bavis was held to one point or less in five different games as a junior last year.

Aidan Fox, Junior, St. John’s School: Scoring attackers get most of the attention, but a lock-down defender can be just as valuable. If St. John’s is to regain its place at the top of Central Mass lacrosse, Fox will be a big reason why. He is already one of the best one-on-one defenders in the region, and has a knack for clearing ground balls. Alongside senior captain Sean Wilson, Fox should help ease the pain of losing last year’s starting goalie Dan Harvey.

Davis Kraft, Junior, Algonquin Regional: Kraft finished last season as one of the hottest scorers in the region. His four-goal effort, including the game-winner in overtime, lifted Algonquin over St. John’s for the Central Mass Championship. With the departure of Zach Tarallo, Kraft will be asked to carry more of the offensive scoring load this season. That means a likely improvement upon his 44 points (28 G, 16 A) from a year ago.
