The Holy Cross Crusaders (1-0) defeated the (0-1) Marist Red Foxes 67-64 on Friday night in New York. The Crusaders are now 68-29 all-time in season openers. 

Bouncing Back

After leading for nearly the entire game, Holy Cross found themselves trailing 52-46 with ten minutes left to play in the half. 

However, the Crusaders bounced back with a 14-2 run to take a 60-54 lead and would not look back. 

Marist would cut their deficit to one point with 6.7 seconds left bur the Crusaders Robert Champion nailed two free throws and sealed the win. 

Next Up

The Crusaders continue their early season road trip when they visit Brown University on Monday, November 16th. Tip-Off is set for 7 p.m.

Cullen Hamilton

Senior guard Cullen Hamilton poured in 11 points on 4 of 9 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from three-point land.

Hamilton started and played 27 minutes in the game.

Robert Champion

A key to the Holy Cross victory was the play of Robert Champion off the bench. Champion poured in 16 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 from the free throw line in 28 minutes of play off the bench. 

Champion also pulled down eight rebounds and had one steal. 

Overall, the Holy Cross bench outscored Marist 23-10 in the game.

Matt Husek

Starting center Matt Husek put on an impressive show for the Crusaders in game one of the season. 

Husek poured in 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field while also pulling down 12 rebounds for a double-double. This was the first double-double of his college career.

Husek played 32 minutes in the game.

Battling Back

After leading the entire game, Holy Cross would trail for the first time, 37-36, and then 52-46 with ten minutes left to play in the game. 

The Crusaders withstood the momentum swing on the road and battled back, using a 14-2 run to take the lead for good. 

The Crusaders' ability to battle back is a good sign for this season.

Holy Cross head coach Bill Carmody gets his first win.

The Crusaders led in the game for 31 minutes and trailed for only six in the game. 

The Crusaders never lost control of the game, even when they trailed by as much as six. 

The Bill Carmody era is off to a good start.
