Edelman made his third catch of the game before his foot appeared to get caught in the turf.
He limped off the field on his own and then was carted to the locker room.
The Patriots listed him as questionable at first before ruling him out for the game.
New England would go on to beat the Lions 30-28 for their first win of the preseason.
Garoppolo Leads Patriots to Win
Trailing 28-24 in the fourth quarter, Garoppolo led the Patriots on a 13 play, 68-yard drive ending with a Gostkowski field goal to cut the Lions lead to 28-27.
In New England's final possession, Garoppolo led the offense on a seven play, 41-yard drive in 1:59. The possession concluded with a Stephen Gostkowski 41-yard field goal to give the Patriots a 30-28 win.
The Patriots first team offense built a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, before the Lions scored 28 straight points to build a 28-24 lead in the fourth quarter.
Next up
The Patriots play their final preseason game on Thursday, August 31, against the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium.
Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
