Luck Not With Celtics in NBA Draft Lottery

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

The Boston Celtics held a 33.4% chance at obtaining a top-three pick in the NBA Draft lottery, but luck was not on their side Tuesday night. The Boston Celtics will select 6th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, a spot they had a 34.2% chance of obtaining before the night started.

The Celtics were hoping for a top-three pick and a chance to draft either Joel Embiid, Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins. With a top-three pick the Celtics would have also had a better chance in trading for Kevin Love from Minnesota, a trade that was rumored to be relying on draft position.

The Celtics will be picking at the 6th overall pick for the first time since selecting Ron Mercer at that spot in 1997.

In their history the Celtics have picked in the number six spot just five times. With those picks they have selected Bob Stauffer in 1952, John Richter in 1959, Larry Bird in 1978, Antoine Walker in 1996 and Mercer in 1997.

The complete NBA Draft lottery order is:

1. Cleveland Cavaliers

2. Milwaukee Bucks

3. Philadelphia 76ers

4. Orlando Magic

5. Utah Jazz

6. Boston Celtics

7. Los Angeles Lakers

8. Sacramento Kings

9. Charlotte Hornets

10. Philadelphia 76ers

11. Denver Nuggets

12. Orlando Magic

13. Minnesota Timberwolves

14. Phoenix Suns
