The Red Sox 9-3 victory over the Yankees even the Sox at 16-16. It kept Boston somewhere in the running and allowed them to pick up a game on both the Yanks and the front running Tampa Bay squad.
The combo of Jon Lester's pitching and the hitting of Jeremy Hermida (not exactly a household name) allowed the Sox to win the finale of the three-game series. The victory was against A.J. Burnett, so it may be a little less meaningful.
It may be one of those games that keep a season alive. A loss would have put the Sox 8.5 games behind Tampa and 8.0 behind the Yanks. Now, the Red Sox are just 2.5 games behind Toronto for third place.
The Sox need the injured back and they need more solid starting pitching like Lester's 7-strong innings (4 hits, 7 SO). Now, it is critical for Beckett and the rest of the rotation to respond. Maybe, just maybe this is one of those games that kick start the team to a run and a chance to get back in the hunt. Maybe.
