Another arrest for the Patriots

Thursday, July 11, 2013

The off-season for the New England Patriots just progressed from bad...to worse.

msn.foxsports.com

After taking a huge hit in the court of public perception following the arrest of Aaron Hernandez on a murder charge, Thursday the Patriots learned of the arrest of cornerback Alfonzo Dennard on suspicion of driving under the influence.  Lincoln, NE police say Dennard was pulled over just before 2:00 am Thursday morning near the downtown area and failed a field sobriety test.

Dennard was taken to a detoxification center in Lincoln, where the University of Nebraska is located, but not jailed. Dennard also is accused of refusing a chemical test and a driving infraction. He has not yet been charged, and faces a court date of August 12...with Patriots' training camp underway in Foxboro at that time.

"The New England Patriots are extremely disappointed to learn of Alfonzo Dennard's arrest," the team said in a statement. "We take this matter very seriously and are working to get more information on the incident."

Dennard was placed on two years of probation in March after being convicted for felony assault on a police officer in an April 2012 incident, just before being drafted by the Patriots. He will also serve a 30-day jail sentence beginning March 1, 2014, for that conviction - a sentence that was expected to be reviewed by the judge in the case if he followed the terms of his probation.

Now, who knows what will happen?

Dennard previously apologized to his coaches, supporters, police and his family at his earlier sentencing, and promised to abide by the terms of the probation.

The arrest comes as former teammate Hernandez faces a murder charge and less than a week after team owner Robert Kraft said the organization would take a hard look at its player evaluation process going forward.  Hernandez was released by the Patriots just after his arrest in North Attleboro, MA.
