Bears Lose Shootout With Army 88-86

If you like offense, Brown’s Pizzatola Sports center was the place to be Tuesday night where the Bears hosted Army in a division one men’s college basketball game. After 40 entertaining minutes of action, the Black Knights escaped the Pizz with an 88-86 win.

Brown was playing its first game in 15 days following a long layoff for final exams and it showed as the Bears fell behind early 15-6 just 4:30 minutes in. But Brown was able to knock off the rust quickly thereafter taking a 10 point lead in the closing minute of the first half before eventually going to the locker room up 8 at the break.

Threes by Sean McGonagill and Peter Sullivan in the opening minute of the second half put the Bears up 12, but that is where Army went on a big run.

A 24-5 run by the Black Knights over the next 6 minutes turned that 12 point deficit into a 7 point lead for Army 64-57.

But the Bears responded once again. Peter Sullivan (24 pts, 7 reb), Garrett Leffelman (17 pts) and Sean McGonagill (career-high 18 pts) sparked a 16-4 run for Brown putting them back up 5 with less than 8 minutes to play.

The Bears would maintain that lead for the next few minutes and led by 2 with 1:14 to go when Army senior guard Mitch McDonald unintentionally banked in a 15-footer from straight away to tie the game at 84.

The Bears had their opportunities down the stretch but Sullivan couldn’t covert on a pair of threes and Army escaped with a 2 point win.

Senior Chris Taylor provided a spark off the Brown bench with 2 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists.

The victory lifted the Black Knights to (6-6) on the season and dropped the Bears to (4-5).

Brown now has another week off before returning to action at Central Connecticut on December 28th.
