Bryant University had its chances, but ultimately fell short down the stretch as Central Connecticut cruised to a 71-55 win at the Detrick Center in Northeast Conference action.
The Bulldogs (8-17, 6-7 NEC) started strong and led by as many as 10 points in the opening half, but the Blue Devils (17-7, 10-3 NEC) closed the half on a 17-5 run and led by two at the break.
Things got worse in the second half as Bryant committed 11 turnovers and allowed 19 free-throw attempts. Central Connecticut finished the game 22-of-24 from the line while Bryant hit just seven free throws and shot 33 percent from the field.
The Blue Devils led by 21 points at the 6:43 mark in the second and eventually opened up a 23-point lead before the Bulldogs closed to within 16 down the stretch. Alex Francis led Bryant with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Matthew Lee finished with a team-high 15 points.
Bryant will return home to face the Blue Devils on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs need one more win to set a new school record for most Northeast Conference wins in a single season.
