Bobcats hold off Bryant

Friday, February 18, 2011

They kept it close, but just couldn’t get over the hump.

Despite strong games from Alex Francis and Cecil Gresham, Bryant University couldn’t dig itself out of an early hole Thursday in an 80-60 loss to Quinnipiac at the Chace Athletic Center.

The Bobcats opened the game with 12 unanswered points, but the Bulldogs closed to within three late in the first half and then cut their deficit to six points early in the second before Quinnipiac pulled away.

Bryant, which beat Quinnipiac earlier this season, dropped to 9-18 overall and 7-8 in the Northeast Conference. The Bobcats are 18-8 overall and 10-5 in conference play.

Francis led the Bulldogs with 17 points and nine rebounds while Greshman chipped in with 11 points. Frankie Dobbs and Vlad Kondratyev each finished with 10 points.

The Bulldogs closed to within 44-38 with 17:40 remaining on a lay-up by Barry Latham, but Quinnipiac answered with a 14-2 run to break the game open. James Johnson hit three 3-pointers during that stretch and finished with a game-high 24 points.

Bryant will return to action Saturday at home against Sacred Heart in its final home game of the season.
