Brock Holt Only Red Sox Selected for All-Star Game
Tuesday, July 07, 2015
Although they've played better recently, the Red Sox are six games under .500 so it's not entirely suprising that they received only one All-Star selection.
While shortstop Xander Bogaerts could have made a strong case to be selected, it was Holt, who is arguably the most valuable player on the team, that got the nod as the team's representative at the Summer Classic.
Bogaerts is among five candidates in the Final Player vote - the last fan vote for selection for the final roster spot. He is going up against second baseman Brian Dozier of the Minnesota Twins, former Red Sox outfielder Yoenis Cespedes of the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals' Mike Moustakas, and New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner.
Holt made a strong impression last season and continued solid production this year while playing every position in the field besides pitcher and catcher. He is hitting .295 with two homeruns, 30 runs and 21 RBIs. He has a very respectable .383 OBP.
On June 16, Holt hit for the cycle against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park and became the first Red Sox player to accomplish the feat since John Valentin in 1996.
